As Ellie tries to understand what is happening, strange memories and fragmented visions begin surfacing. However, the deeper she digs, the more unstable her reality becomes. Because of that, the movie slowly turns into a disturbing psychological spiral.
The story focuses heavily on fear, identity, and the breakdown of trust within her own family.
Jessica Rothe gives a strong lead performance and carries much of the emotional weight. Her confusion and panic feel believable, which helps ground the story even when reality becomes unclear. Meanwhile, the quieter scenes build dread surprisingly well.
The movie also benefits from restraint. Instead of relying heavily on jump scares, it slowly builds paranoia and emotional pressure. So the tension continues growing throughout the film.
The slow pacing may frustrate viewers expecting more traditional horror. Also, the movie leaves several questions unanswered, which may not work for everyone.
Affection works best as a psychological horror experience focused on fear and emotional instability. It is quiet, unsettling, and intentionally uncomfortable. If you enjoy slow-burn psychological horror, this one is worth watching.
