Some horror movies throw blood at the wall. This one stares at the wall until the wall feels wrong.

Backrooms takes a simple hook and squeezes it until it starts to breathe. A strange doorway appears in the basement of a furniture showroom. That is all it needs to get moving. From there, the film turns blank rooms and buzzing lights into a full panic attack.

The setup is clean and nasty. In the basement of a furniture showroom, a doorway appears where it should not be. It does not feel magical. It feels like a mistake in reality.

Soon, the characters step into a place that does not follow normal rules. The rooms stretch on. The lighting feels sick. The air has that stale, trapped quality you get in places nobody was meant to live.

The film follows its ensemble as they try to understand what they have found. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lukita Maxwell, and Avan Jogia help ground the nightmare. They give the story a human pulse, even when the setting starts to swallow everything else.

This is not a puzzle-box horror film in the clean sense. It is more about pressure. The deeper the characters go, the less useful logic becomes.

The atmosphere is the star here. Kane Parsons understands that empty space can be terrifying when it feels just a little off. The film gets a lot of fear from distance, silence, bad lighting, and rooms that seem too normal to trust.

The sound design also does heavy lifting. The hums, echoes, and far-off noises make the place feel alive. Even when nothing is happening, you keep waiting for something to break the quiet. That tension works.

The cast helps sell the dread. Ejiofor brings weight and control, while Reinsve adds a sharp emotional edge. Duplass fits well in this kind of uneasy material, where normal people try to talk their way through something insane.

Most of all, the movie respects the fear of the unknown. It does not rush to explain every corner. That will annoy some viewers, but I liked it. The less the film explains, the more the place feels endless.

The character work is not always as strong as the mood. A few people feel more like functions than full people. They panic, argue, or push the story forward, but they do not always stick in your head.

The pacing also sags in the middle. The film is great at building unease, but there are moments where it circles the same feeling for too long. A little more variety would have helped.

Also, if you want clear answers, this may frustrate you. The movie gives enough to follow the emotional ride, but it does not hand you a neat rulebook.

Backrooms is at its best when it trusts the horror of being lost. It turns cheap carpet, blank walls, and fluorescent light into something deeply wrong.

It is not perfect, and it could use sharper characters. Still, as a mood piece, it works. If liminal horror gets under your skin, this one is worth opening the door for.
