Coherence (2013)

Some horror films kick down the door. Coherence just locks it quietly and lets you panic.

James Ward Byrkit’s low-key sci-fi nightmare takes one normal dinner party and slowly poisons it with doubt. There are no monsters in the usual sense. Still, by the end, everyone feels dangerous.

Four couples meet for dinner on the night a comet passes overhead. At first, the mood is awkward but familiar. Old tension sits under the small talk. People drink, tease each other, and act like everything is fine.

Then the power cuts out. Phones stop working. Strange things start happening nearby. The group tries to make sense of it, but every answer only creates more questions.

The story works best when you know little going in. What begins as a weird night turns into a reality-bending trap. Soon, the real threat is not just outside the house. It is sitting at the table.

The best thing about Coherence is how much fear it wrings from almost nothing. A house, a few rooms, and a group of nervous people are enough. Byrkit keeps the camera close, so every look feels loaded. You start watching faces for clues.

The cast sells the panic well. Emily Baldoni gives the film a strong emotional center, while Maury Sterling, Nicholas Brendon, Lorene Scafaria, Elizabeth Gracen, Hugo Armstrong, Alex Manugian, and Lauren Maher all add to the uneasy group dynamic. Nobody feels fully safe. That matters a lot here.

The writing is clever without feeling smug. James Ward Byrkit and Alex Manugian build the mystery piece by piece. Better yet, they let the characters argue, guess, and spiral in a way that feels messy and human.

Also, the film understands paranoia. Once trust breaks, every small choice becomes scary. A glance across the room can feel like a threat. That is where the movie really shines.

The loose, natural style may not work for everyone. Some scenes have a raw, improvised feel. For me, that adds tension. Still, viewers who want polished dialogue and clean answers may get frustrated.

The film also asks you to stay alert. If you check your phone for five minutes, you may lose the thread. This is not a background movie. It demands attention, and it does not hold your hand.

Coherence is a smart little nightmare with big ideas and a nasty sense of unease. It proves that horror does not need a huge budget to mess with your head.

It is tense, strange, and easy to rewatch because the puzzle keeps pulling you back in. For fans of sci-fi horror with brains and bite, this one is absolutely worth the trip.
