This is the movie that turned Camp Crystal Lake into sacred slasher ground. It may look rough now, but it still has a mean streak that works.
A new group of counselors arrives to help reopen the camp. They clean cabins, flirt, swim, joke around, and ignore every warning sign horror fans know by heart.
Then people start dying. Someone is watching from the trees, and the film keeps that threat hidden for most of the ride. The woods feel quiet, wet, and unsafe.
Sean S. Cunningham keeps the plot lean. There is no big maze of twists here. It is a simple setup, but it works because the camp itself feels cursed.
The killer’s point-of-view shots do a lot of heavy lifting. They make the movie feel sneaky and cruel. You feel like you are hiding in the brush with something that should not be there.
The cast also sells the setup well. Adrienne King brings a grounded final-girl energy without overplaying it. Kevin Bacon also stands out early in his career, and the young cast gives the camp a believable hangout vibe.
Then there are the kills. They are blunt, nasty, and memorable. The effects have that practical horror texture that modern fans still crave. They do not feel polished, but they do feel physical.
The acting is also uneven. That is common for this era of slashers, but it still shows. A few line readings land flat, even when the scene should be tense.
Also, the film’s mystery is stronger than its character work. The idea is scary, but the people are mostly there to be stalked. If you need rich drama, this is not that movie.
It works best as a campfire nightmare. Simple story. Bad weather. Bad luck. Something in the woods. For slasher fans, that is more than enough.
