Halloween (2018)

Some horror franchises need a clean cut. Halloween 2018 takes that idea seriously. It ignores most of the baggage and focuses on one thing: Laurie Strode versus Michael Myers.

That choice works. David Gordon Green brings the series back to a colder, meaner place. The result is not perfect, but it feels like a real Halloween movie again.

Four decades after the original Halloween night massacre, Laurie Strode is still living with the damage. She has not moved on. She has trained, prepared, and shaped her whole life around the idea that Michael Myers may return.

Her obsession has also hurt her family. Her daughter Karen, played by Judy Greer, carries deep resentment. Her granddaughter Allyson, played by Andi Matichak, wants a normal life and does not fully understand the shadow hanging over them.

Of course, Michael does come back. Once he escapes custody, the night turns bloody fast. The Shape moves through Haddonfield again, silent and brutal, while Laurie finally gets the confrontation she has been waiting for.

Jamie Lee Curtis is the heart of the film. She plays Laurie as tough, scared, angry, and broken all at once. This is not a simple hero comeback. Laurie feels like someone who survived hell, then spent forty years trapped in its echo.

Michael Myers also feels dangerous again. James Jude Courtney and Nick Castle give him a slow, dead presence that works well. He does not need speeches or big tricks. He just appears, watches, and kills. That simplicity makes him scary.

The film has some great slasher energy. Several kills are blunt and nasty without turning the whole thing into empty gore. Green also gives Haddonfield a strong Halloween mood, with glowing pumpkins, quiet streets, and that awful sense that someone is always nearby.

I also like how the movie treats trauma. It does not always go deep, but it gives Laurie’s fear real weight. Her paranoia may look extreme, yet the film understands where it comes from. That gives the final act more punch.

Some of the side characters feel thin. A few exist only to walk into danger, make bad choices, or add jokes that do not always land. The film is at its best with Laurie, Michael, and the family conflict.

There are also moments where the script gets a little too cute with references. Fans will catch plenty of nods to the original, but a few feel forced. Thankfully, they do not sink the movie.

The tone can wobble now and then. Some humor works, but some of it undercuts the tension. For a movie this focused on trauma and fear, the lighter bits can feel out of place.

Halloween 2018 is one of the better legacy sequels in modern horror. It respects John Carpenter’s original without feeling like a lifeless copy. More importantly, it gives Laurie Strode a reason to matter again.

It has flaws, but the core works. Curtis is excellent, Michael is scary, and the final showdown has real force. For slasher fans, this is a bloody and satisfying return to Haddonfield.
