Intro:
Some horror movies shock audiences with gore alone. Martyrs goes much deeper by combining brutal violence with emotional trauma and philosophical dread. Meanwhile, the movie keeps getting darker as its true purpose slowly comes into focus.
Synopsis:
The story begins with Lucie, a young woman who escaped horrific abuse as a child. Years later, she believes she has finally found the people responsible for her suffering.

However, what starts as a revenge story quickly becomes something much worse. As Lucie’s friend Anna becomes trapped in the aftermath, the movie reveals a horrifying organization with deeply disturbing goals. The further the story unfolds, the more hopeless everything feels.

Summary:
What Works
The emotional intensity is what separates Martyrs from many other extreme horror films. The violence is graphic, yet the movie constantly focuses on suffering, trauma, and emotional collapse instead of empty shock value.

Morjana Alaoui gives an especially powerful performance as Anna. Her fear and exhaustion feel painfully real during the second half of the movie. Because of that, many scenes become difficult to watch even when very little dialogue is happening.

The movie’s pacing also deserves credit. The first act feels chaotic and violent, while the second half slows down into something colder and more methodical. That shift creates a crushing sense of dread because viewers slowly realize where the story is heading.

Horror fans especially remember the creature-like woman haunting Lucie early in the film. The fast movements and brutal attacks create some genuinely frightening moments before the movie transitions into deeper psychological horror.

The final act is where Martyrs truly stands apart. Instead of ending with simple violence, the movie leaves viewers with disturbing philosophical questions about suffering and the afterlife. Few horror movies stay in your head this long afterward.

What Doesn’t Work
The extreme violence and emotional cruelty will completely overwhelm some viewers. Also, the second half becomes repetitive by design, which may test patience for audiences expecting a more traditional horror structure. This is absolutely not casual viewing
Final Thoughts
Martyrs remains one of the defining films of the New French Extremity movement because it combines brutal horror with genuine emotional weight. Fans of disturbing psychological horror should experience it at least once if they can handle extreme content. The Psychological category fits best because the movie focuses heavily on trauma, suffering, emotional destruction, and existential fear rather than supernatural scares or slasher-style violence.
