Passenger (2026)

Van life already feels like a horror setup waiting to happen. You have tight space, lonely roads, weak cell service, and nowhere good to hide. Passenger takes that idea and adds a demonic hitchhiker nobody asked for.

André Øvredal is a good fit for this kind of story. He has a strong feel for slow dread and creepy details. Here, he turns a highway accident into the start of something much worse.

The story follows a young couple whose road adventure goes bad after they witness a brutal crash. At first, it feels like trauma. They saw something awful, and now they have to live with it.

But then the mood changes. The couple begins to sense that something followed them from the accident scene. Their van stops feeling like freedom and starts feeling like a trap.

That presence is called the Passenger. It is not just a ghostly shadow or a vague curse. It wants them, and it keeps pushing closer. The film works best when it lets that simple threat breathe.

The strongest thing here is the setup. A van should feel safe, private, and mobile. Instead, Øvredal makes it feel cramped and exposed. Every stop on the road brings new tension. Every mile feels like it may be taking them deeper into danger.

The supernatural angle also has a nasty edge. The Passenger is not treated like a cheap jump scare machine. It feels patient, hungry, and personal. That gives the film more weight than a basic road-trip haunting.

Lou Llobell and Jacob Scipio carry a lot of the movie’s emotional pressure. Their fear feels grounded, which helps the stranger moments land. Melissa Leo also brings instant texture whenever she is on screen. She has that rare ability to make even a quiet scene feel loaded.

The R rating helps too. The movie does not have to pull every punch. It uses the aftermath of violence well, especially in the way the crash hangs over the rest of the story. The horror is not only about what is chasing them. It is also about what they cannot shake.

Some of the story beats are easy to spot. If you watch a lot of supernatural horror, you will likely guess a few turns early. The film still has tension, but it does not always surprise.

The mythology around the Passenger could also use a little more bite. The movie gives us enough to understand the threat. Even so, I wanted a bit more depth without turning it into a lore dump.

A few supporting characters feel more useful than memorable. That is not a dealbreaker, since the core couple drives the film. Still, the world around them could have felt stranger and more dangerous.

Passenger is a solid supernatural horror ride with a strong premise and a mean streak. It takes a trendy lifestyle fantasy and twists it into something claustrophobic and cursed.

It may not reinvent demonic horror, but it knows how to build pressure. If you like road horror, haunted spaces, and dark forces that refuse to let go, this one is worth the trip.
