Intro:
Some horror movies rely on loud jump scares every few minutes. Sinister takes a different approach by building fear slowly through mystery, sound, and deeply disturbing imagery. Meanwhile, the movie’s homemade film reels create an atmosphere that feels genuinely wrong from the very beginning.
Synopsis:
Ellison Oswalt is a true crime writer struggling to revive his career after years without a hit book. Hoping for inspiration, he moves his family into a house connected to a brutal murder case.

While searching the attic, Ellison discovers a box of old film reels that appear to document several murders. However, the deeper he investigates the footage, the more dangerous the situation becomes for his family. Soon, the line between crime investigation and supernatural horror completely disappears.

Summary:
What Works
The homemade murder reels are easily the movie’s strongest feature. Each tape has its own style and horrifying setup, which keeps the tension fresh throughout the film. Also, the grainy footage and distorted music make those scenes feel deeply uncomfortable.

Ethan Hawke gives one of the better performances in modern supernatural horror. He plays Ellison as selfish and obsessive without making him completely unlikeable. Because of that, his growing fear feels believable as the mystery unfolds.

The sound design deserves huge credit as well. Strange noises, low droning music, and sudden bursts of audio create constant tension even during quiet scenes. Horror fans especially remember the lawn mower sequence because the buildup works so well before the scare hits.

The movie also understands restraint. Instead of fully explaining every detail immediately, it lets viewers slowly piece together the mystery. That slower approach makes the supernatural elements feel more threatening once they fully appear.

What Doesn’t Work
The final act loses some of the grounded realism that makes the earlier scenes so effective. Also, a few late jump scares feel more traditional compared to the movie’s otherwise slow and creepy tone. Some viewers may also find the ghost children distracting rather than frightening.
Final Thoughts
Sinister stands out as one of the strongest supernatural horror films of the 2010s because of its disturbing imagery and relentless tension. Fans of slow-burn horror and cursed media stories should have a great time with it. The Supernatural category fits best because the mystery ultimately revolves around a demonic entity and paranormal forces rather than human violence alone.
