Triangle (2009)

Some horror movies hit you with blood and noise. This one gets under your skin with dread, déjà vu, and a growing sense that reality has snapped in half.

At first, it looks like a boat trip gone wrong. But once the story moves onto a strange ocean liner, the film becomes a cruel puzzle box. And the more it reveals, the worse you feel for everyone trapped inside it.

Jess, played by Melissa George, joins a group of friends for a day on a yacht. She seems tired and distant from the start. Something feels off, even before the weather turns bad.

After a violent storm, the group finds a large passenger ship drifting nearby. It looks empty, but it does not feel abandoned. Soon, strange signs begin to appear, and the characters realize they may not be alone.

The less you know going in, the better. The film plays with time, memory, and guilt in a way that rewards close attention. It is not just about survival. It is about being trapped in a nightmare that may have rules no one understands.

Melissa George carries the film with a strong, anxious performance. Jess could have been a bland lead, but George gives her layers. She feels scared, confused, and broken in ways that make more sense as the story unfolds.

Christopher Smith directs with real control. The first act has a clean, almost sunny look, which makes the shift into dread feel sharper. Once the characters board the ship, the mood turns cold and wrong. Empty halls, silent decks, and odd little details do a lot of heavy lifting.

The structure is the real hook. This is a horror movie that wants you to think, but it still remembers to be tense. It drops clues, repeats moments, and twists scenes in smart ways. Even better, the film does not stop dead to explain itself every five minutes.

It also has a nasty emotional bite. The violence matters because the story keeps circling back to pain, choice, and punishment. By the end, the horror feels less like a trick and more like a sentence.

Some of the supporting characters are thin. They serve the plot well enough, but most do not leave a strong mark outside of Jess. That makes a few deaths feel more like puzzle pieces than gut punches.

Also, the film asks for patience. If you want a straight slasher or a simple ghost ship movie, this may frustrate you. It repeats scenes by design, and while that pays off, a few viewers may feel the loop before they feel the dread.

Triangle is a smart, grim little horror film with more going on than its setup suggests. It blends psychological terror, survival horror, and mystery without losing its nasty edge.

It is best watched knowing as little as possible. Give it your full attention, and it becomes a bleak, clever ride that sticks around after the credits roll.
